LinkedIn company list targeting for B2B SaaS ABM: setup and limits
- LinkedIn accepts up to 300,000 companies per CSV, suggests at least 1,000 and needs 300 matched members before a campaign can serve.
- A list needs at least one of company name, domain, website or LinkedIn page URL, and takes up to 48 hours to match.
- A company list fixes company size and industry, but not roles. In one audit, job function and seniority caused 52% of wasted LinkedIn spend.
- Unused segments are archived after 30 days and expire after 90, so lists for paused campaigns need refreshing.
LinkedIn matches an uploaded list of companies against its company pages, and ads are then shown only to members who work at the matched companies. The list can hold up to 300,000 companies per CSV, LinkedIn suggests at least 1,000, and a campaign can serve once the list reaches 300 matched members. Role targeting is then layered on top, because the list alone reaches everyone at each company.
List rules on this page come from LinkedIn's Marketing API documentation, read in October 2026. The waste figures come from The State of Wasted LinkedIn Ads Spend in B2B SaaS (GrowthSpree, June 2026), an audit of 56 accounts and $9.4M in spend, with no calendar period stated.
How does LinkedIn company list targeting work for ABM?
In five steps, from file to live campaign.
| Step | What to do | LinkedIn's rule |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Build the file | One row per company, with name, domain or page URL | At least one of companyname, companydomain, companywebsite or linkedincompanypageurl |
| 2. Upload | Add the CSV in Campaign Manager or through HubSpot | Up to 300,000 records or 20MB |
| 3. Wait for matching | LinkedIn matches the list to company pages | 24 to 48 hours |
| 4. Add role targeting | Layer job function, seniority or title | Audience must reach 300 matched members |
| 5. Launch and check | Review the demographics report after the first week | Reports by company and by member attributes |
LinkedIn describes the purpose plainly: "Account targeting enables advertisers to target large lists of companies for their LinkedIn ad campaigns."
What should the CSV contain?
The fields that make a match unambiguous. LinkedIn's documentation lists these headers for company lists.
| Header | Example from LinkedIn's documentation | Use |
|---|---|---|
| companyname | Microsoft | Required unless another key field is present |
| companydomain | microsoft.com | Key field |
| companywebsite | microsoft.com | Key field |
| linkedincompanypageurl | www.linkedin.com/company/microsoft | Key field |
| stocksymbol | MSFT | Helps for public companies |
| city, state, companycountry, zipcode | Seattle, Washington, US | Narrows matches for common names |
| industry | Technology | Optional |
A header row must contain at least one of company name, domain, website or LinkedIn page URL. Common company names can be ambiguous, so adding a domain or page URL may help the match.
How big should the list be?
Big enough to serve, small enough to mean something. LinkedIn's rules set the floor and ceiling.
| Rule | LinkedIn's documentation |
|---|---|
| Suggested minimum | "At least 1,000 companies for best results" |
| Maximum | 300,000 records per CSV |
| Minimum to serve | "A minimum of 300 matched members" |
LinkedIn adds that a campaign can serve "regardless of how many companies are in your list" once it reaches 300 matched members. A list of 100 large companies can run. A list of 30 small companies, narrowed to directors in one function, may not.
That creates a gap with ABM practice. One published practitioner framework sets one-to-one ABM at 10 to 50 accounts and one-to-many at 200 to 500. LinkedIn suits the larger tiers best. The list size question is covered in how many target accounts should an ABM program have.
How should roles be layered on the list?
With exclusions first and seniority split by campaign. A company list reaches everyone at the company: interns, recruiters and finance staff as well as buyers.
The 2026 LinkedIn audit shows what happens without role controls. Across 56 accounts, average waste was 32.0% of spend, and the top three causes were:
| Cause | Share of waste |
|---|---|
| Non-buying job functions | 30% |
| Seniority mislabeling | 22% |
| Company-size leakage | 15% |
A company list removes most company-size and industry leakage. It does nothing for job function and seniority, which together caused 52% of waste in that audit. Three rules help.
- Exclude functions that do not buy the product. The audit names Sales, Business Development, HR, Accounting and Support as common leaks.
- Treat "Senior" with care. The report says LinkedIn's Senior tier "usually means individual contributor."
- Bid by seniority tier. The audit's plan uses bid adjustments of +50% for C-suite, +30% for VP and +25% for Director, each applied to its own seniority tier.
Can HubSpot send target accounts to LinkedIn?
Yes. HubSpot's ABM tools can create a LinkedIn company segment audience from target accounts, once a LinkedIn Ads account is connected. The ABM tools need Marketing Hub or Sales Hub Professional or Enterprise.
Building the audience from the CRM avoids a separate spreadsheet that drifts out of date. The HubSpot page read does not say how often the audience refreshes, so it is worth checking after each change to the list. The setup is in how to set up ABM in HubSpot.
What should be checked after launch?
Three reports, in the first week and then weekly.
- Demographics. Which job functions, seniorities and company sizes took the spend. This is where role leakage shows first.
- Company engagement. LinkedIn's Company Engagement Report shows ad engagement, organic engagement and website visits by company.
- Audience penetration. LinkedIn defines it as unique members reached divided by total target audience size. It is not available for date ranges longer than 92 days.
Reach and engagement show that the ads are landing. Whether ABM is working depends on pipeline per account, covered on the measuring ABM page.
What are the common mistakes?
Five come up often.
- Names without domains. Common names on their own may match poorly.
- A list too small to serve. Fewer than 300 matched members after role targeting.
- No role exclusions. The list reaches everyone at each company.
- Stale segments. LinkedIn archives segments after 30 days unused and expires them after 90, so lists for paused campaigns need refreshing.
- Reporting on clicks. Click-through rate tracked pipeline weakly in a 2026 study of 1,412 ad variants, at 0.09. For LinkedIn sponsored content alone, the study put it at 0.04.
FAQ
How many companies can a LinkedIn company list hold?
LinkedIn's documentation sets a maximum of 300,000 records, or 20MB, per CSV upload. It suggests at least 1,000 companies for best results. A campaign can serve once the list reaches 300 matched members, whatever the number of companies on it.
How long does LinkedIn take to match a company list?
LinkedIn's documentation says audiences take 24 to 48 hours to be ready for campaign targeting, and that a list may take up to 48 hours to process. Lists should be uploaded at least two days before a campaign is due to start.
What fields does a LinkedIn company list need?
A header row must contain at least one of company name, company domain, company website or LinkedIn company page URL. Optional fields include stock symbol, city, state, country, zip code and industry. Adding a domain or page URL alongside the name can help with common names.
Does a company list reach only decision-makers?
No. A company list reaches members at the matched companies in any role. Role targeting by job function, seniority or title has to be layered on top. In a 2026 audit of 56 LinkedIn accounts, decision-makers received 33% of budget against a target of 60% or more.
Do LinkedIn company lists expire?
Unused segments do. LinkedIn archives segments after 30 days without use and expires them after 90. A list built for a campaign that was paused for a quarter will need to be uploaded again before it can run.
Conclusion
LinkedIn company list targeting turns an ABM target list into an ad audience, within clear limits: up to 300,000 companies per CSV, a suggested minimum of 1,000, and 300 matched members to serve. The list solves which companies see the ads, not which people. Role exclusions and separate seniority campaigns do that, and in one audit they addressed causes behind 52% of wasted spend. Results should be judged on pipeline from the listed accounts.
